SANDERSON HOTEL: MAD HATTER'S AFTERNOON TEA

Afternoon tea is a ritual for me and my mum and now i've moved out and don't get to see her as often, we organise little sunday fun-days every now and then so we can gossip and catch up on what's been happening in each other's lives. it was my turn to treat my mum so i chose to take her down the rabbit hole to an Alice in Wonderland themed afternoon tea at the Sanderson hotel.

As we arrived early, we propped ourselves up at the infamous ‘Long Bar’ for a cocktail. Dawnie went for a Lychee Martini and i had a Love and Rockets – gin, strawberries, fresh rocket leaves and Prosecco – delicious! After slurping our way through our cocktail, we were seated in the conservatory and presented with a vintage book which contained our menu for the afternoon and asked to smell the scent of the various special teas on offer. The Alice in Wonderland theme comes to life in every element of the afternoon tea, from the little ‘drink me’ bottles through to the queen of hearts teapots. Both my mum and I opted for the strawberries and cream tea and made our way through the tiers of treats presented in front of us.

Sandwiches came in the form of: smoked Cumbrian ham with wholegrain mustard on sun dried tomato bread, cucumber and chive cream on spinach bread, cold smoked salmon and lemon butter on dark rye bread and egg mayonnaise with watercress and smoked salt on lemon bread. Each was delicately rolled and presented alongside a spinach and cheese quiche and savoury scone with herb butter.

For sweet, there was a selection of cakes including a Melting mango cheesecake and Matcha green tea and white chocolate mousse served in chocolate tea cup. My personal favourite touch was the carrot meringue served on a bed of pea shoots and 'Strawberries and cream' homemade marshmallow shaped like mushrooms. If you have any room after all of this, there’s also special jelly servery which isn’t too be missed where you can feast on wobbly bowls of brightly colour jellies in flavours such as blackcurrant and green apple.

We opted to have our afternoon tea served with a glass of Thienot Rose NV Champagne which brought the cost up to
£58 per person but it was worth every penny and such a lovely experience for us both! I’m looking forward to our next Sunday Fun-day already!
