Breakfast is hands down one of my favourite meals of the day. I can eat breakfast for lunch. I can eat breakfast for dinner and I can even be persuaded to get up at 7am to travel across London for it.
So what is this breakfast for which you would leave at 7am you ask? This breakfast in question was 31 floors up in the air and over at one of London's most impressive buildings - The Shard. I'm just going to caveat this by saying that the experience was why I got up early before we all get carried away...
If you've been before, you might know that the Shard has three main restaurants; Aqua, Oblix and Hutong - but Aqua is the only one to open early enough for breakfast. Serving from 7am to 10.30am during the week or between 9-10am at weekends, Aqua has all your favourite breakfast dishes from freshly baked pastries to eggs Benedicts and fry-ups.
After that extra early start - granola and yoghurt wasn't going to cut it for me. I needed something big and I needed something substantial so there was only one thing for it.
I needed the Shard full English (£18.50). Two free-range eggs (cooked how you like - so I went for poached), treacle cured streaky bacon, cumberland sausage, spinach, ricotta, vine tomatoes, grilled mushrooms, baked beans, black pudding, a hash brown and sourdough toast! I promise it's all there - hidden under the bacon!
As I said before, the food alone isn't what drags you out of bed early in the morning. It's the view which you get while you're sipping your morning latte that you're really paying for. And on a gorgeous day like this, it's worth every penny.
Breakfast at Aqua was brilliant but it's also open in the evenings for dinner or drinks. If you want to take in the views of the Shard - without paying the steep charges to visit the viewing platform - it's definitely worth heading up to Aqua or Oblix for a drink in the bars. All the views for a fraction of the cost!
