Saturday night was a long overdue date night for Tom & I. It's been ages since we've been out for dinner in London together so we put on our fancy frocks (me more so than Tom) and headed to London Bridge to Tanner & Co where I'd been invited to try out the new menu.
Tanner & Co is the debut offering from Camm & Hooper, a new bar and restaurant group operating in the city. The 100-seater restaurant sits on the site which formerly housed Delfina and is decked out like an old school gymnasium.
We arrived just before 7pm and the place was buzzing, especially for the City and we were quickly seen to our table. After a quick scan of the cocktail menu, we set about wetting our whistles with the interesting named cocktail menu.
I opted for the 'when rhubarb & custard flipped' (£8.50) cocktail - an industrial-stength concotion of rhubarb & vanilla vodka, advocate and condensed milk while Tom went for the 'Ah Sings Plum Sling' (£7.50), a fruity mix of plum infused gin, ginger ale and cranberry.
Our waiter Charlie suggested we order 1-2 small plates each to share before the main event so we settled on a mix of starters including the pigs in blankets (£5) marinated in a sweet honey mustard which was our favourite dish of the whole meal.The Scotch Egg (£6) was delicious and perfectly cooked with a gorgeous bright orange yolk. I really wasn't keen on the accompanying mushroom ketchup though which was just rather tasteless and gelatinous in texture.
I also wasn't too keen on the ham hock terrine (£7). It was pleasant but there wasn't really any jelly to hold the terrine together so felt more like a pulled ham in a jar. The pumpkin chutney was brilliant though and helped balance the saltiness of the meat.Fairing far better though were the devilled mushrooms on sourdough toast (£7) which were delicious. A really generous portion of mushrooms with just the right amount of heat - I'm not usually too fond of creamy mushroom sauces so this got the balance just right.
For main courses we decided to share the rib of beef which came with two sides for £55. I'd seen Rosie's review where she thought it was under seasoned, but that certainly wasn't the case for us - the meat was perfectly cooked, on the rarer side of medium rare, with just the right amount of salt. We also devoured the buttered spinach, chips and a calorie-laden mac & cheese which we added in as a greedy extra!
Overall we really enjoyed our meal at Tanner & Co. It wasn't perfect but there were plenty of really good dishes and the rib of beef was definitely worth the visit. Some of the dishes come with a pretty hefty price-tag but the atmosphere and food definitely made it worth the visit.
