HOW TO STAY HEALTHY AT WORK

Are you reading this at work?

I'm not going to tell your boss or anything. I'm just saying I can relate.

I have a desk based job. So I sit down at work every single day. And I rarely take a proper lunch break for myself meaning I dine 'al desko' almost every day too.
According to a recent survey, one in three of us sit at our desks to eat and well....all that sitting can make you start to feel a little like a potato.

We spend around 8 hours of our day at work so I wanted to put together this little list of tips which can help you feel a bit healthier at the office.

Now I'm not suggesting you start doing squats at the printer because - LOL - but I am going to give you a couple of little hints on how to be a little healthier while sat at your desk all day.

    SUPERCHARGE YOUR H20
Everyone knows they should be drinking more water. You don't need to be told that. But 8 glasses of water every day can be hard work (funny how drinking the equivalent in G&Ts is so easy though?

There's little ways you can make getting your water intake more interesting - try adding slices of lemon or cucumber to your glass. Or mint or pomegranate seeds to your ice cubes? My favourite though is a dash of lime in sparkling water - so refreshing!
    SWERVE THE SARNIE
What you eat at lunch-time sets you up for the rest of the day so I try to avoid eating anything too stodgy or I end up hitting a slump by late afternoon.

Try to aim for something with a serving of protein, some fats, veggies and a small amount of carbs to keep you going but won't result in that awful 4pm carb hangover.

I've been trialling the new Greggs salad range this last week and I have to say I'm really impressed.

The Falafel and Houmous salad is my clear favourite but the shredded teriyaki chicken is also pretty delicious. All the ingredients are fresh and crisp (essential characteristics of a salad) but they also have flavour! No dull, dry rabbit food here. Plus they're all under 400 calories so tick, tick, tick for me!
    GET OFF YOUR SEAT
Look I couldn't get through a list on being healthier at work without suggesting some form of exercise could I?

Like I said, squats at the printer or tricep dips off your desk are unrealistic suggestions but taking a walk at lunch time should be perfectly manageable.

It's also good to take a break and clear your mind of e-mails and work for a little bit so you can hit the ground running when your back at your desk.
    REST YOUR EYES
Talking of taking a little break, staring at a computer screen all day gives me really bad blood-shot eyes.

Seriously, I look like I've been drinking gin.

One good tip is to regularly look away from your screen (not to avoid work obvs). Pick a spot at the opposite end of the office and blink slowly 10-15 times - this should help ease the soreness.

I also keep Optrex eye drops in my bag for days when they get particularly bad!

    SNACK WISELY
If your office is anything like mine, it's probably full of snacks. Chocolate, biscuits, the occasional birthday cake.

There's no need to deprive yourself of the occasional biscuit. Everyone deserves a little treat now and then but making your way through the whole pack of McVities' everyday isn't ideal.

I find if you plan your snacks ahead, you'll be a lot less likely to find your hand up in the biscuit jar!

I try to include protein or fats in my snacks so good options are: nuts, apple slices with peanut butter or Total Fage yoghurt with fruit.
So there you have it - my top tips to be a little healthier at work! If you have any handy tops of your own let me know in the comments below.
